Grey's Anatomy is a hospital drama that focuses on Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), one of several third year residents at a Seattle Grace hospital. Along with her colleagues, Meredith struggles to maintain relationships while staying sharp at work.

The professional roles and real lives… More of a diverse group of surgeons collide unexpectedly in this Golden Globe-winning ABC television drama. As a third-year resident at Seattle Grace Hospital, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) tries hard to live up to the reputation of her legendary surgeon mother while hiding the fact that her mom now suffers from Alzheimer's disease. As if life weren't complicated enough, Meredith also marries boss, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). Meredith's friend and rival Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) finds herself in a romance with 'army man' Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) how came to Seattle Grace from Afghanistan were he worked as a doctor. As for Meredith and Cristina's fellow residents (some not so much)-- Isobel "Izzie" Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) -- they've got problems of their own. Izzie does not want to be judged by her underwear-model past and works hard but when she gets cancer, she gets fired and leaves her husband Alex. Alex is still better at bedding the ladies than bedside manner after his wife leaves and is trying to get over the grief. When Merediths little sister 'little grey' or Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) joined the picture in season 4 and is dating 'McSteamy' Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) who was Derek Shepherd's best friend in New York before he slept with Addison Montgomery-Shepherd (Kate Walsh [who now stars in the show Private Practice]) who was married to Derek (Addison and Derek finally divorced in Season 2). Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) turns out to be gay and now Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) is her partner. All eight residents still answer to the roar of senior resident Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), affectionately known as "the Nazi." But even Dr. Bailey jumps to it when Chief of Surgery Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is on the scene. But there is one thing you must remember "Medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of grey."

As part of their training, Seattle Grace's residents are put in charge; the attending surgeons compete for a million-dollar grant.

The Chief promotes all of the fourth year residents to attending doctors, but just for the day. The Chief also comes up with a competition for the other doctors. He has a one million dollar grant to give to whoever gives the best presentation. All the doctors want the money. Owen's presentation is on how he wants to use the money for disaster training. Mark wants to expand the burn unit and make their hospital nationally renowned for plastic surgery. Arizona gives a tearful presentation about how she wants to use the grant on children.

Callie ends up talking about Arizona in her presentation and calls her out. She says that Callie only wants the money to even the playing field in their relationship. Derek's presentation is about finding a cure for Alzheimer's. Bailey tells the Chief that she would spend the money to hire another nurse. He does not think it is a good idea. She retaliates by telling him that she knows he does not have the million dollar grant. He is hoping to get it in the next few weeks. He gives the grant to Owen...

April pleads for Cristina to help her diagnose the patient. April and Cristina go meet with the Chief and Teddie to discuss whether to a lung transplant is even an option for the patient. April does not think that transplant is an option. Cristina steps in and speaks on behalf of the patient, suggesting they do the transplant.

Meredith competes with Dr. Avery to scrub in to a neuro surgery with Derek. They see who can carve their name into an egg the best. Dr. Avery leads Meredith to believe that he would be unable to do it. In the end, Meredith only manages to carve her initials in the egg when Dr. Avery carves his entire name. Dr. Avery gets to scrub in with Derek. Meredith ends up performing a solo neuro surgery. Something goes wrong and she ends up needing help from Derek, immediately. But Derek is busy in the OR fixing Dr. Avery's mistakes. By the time he reaches Meredith's OR, she has already saved the patient.
