Smallville tells the tale of a teenage Clark Kent in the days before he was Superman. It is the town where he came from where very strange things started happening with his arrival in a spaceship in the midst of a meteor storm of green rocks. Clark must deal with a variety of… More individuals given powers by the green rocks, keep his powers a secret, cope with his friendship with a young Lex Luthor, and balance the two girls in his life, Chloe and Lana. The show also shows us how Lex Luthor develops from a friend of Clark's and kinda-okay guy to (presumably) the villain who will plague Superman in his later years.

As Clark drives Lois out of town for a trip for a story about the Cherry Blossom Festival, he explains that most of what she's encountered over the years has been Kryptonian. She's happy that Kat isn't with them, but quickly realize that Clark got her out of town so she wouldn't be able to cover the antihero rally. Lois thanks him for his concern, but insists that she can take care of herself. Before Clark can respond, two of their tires blow out. They're out of reception range, and Clark starts changing the tires. A girl comes over a nearby vegetable & fruit stand and is thankful that they're unharmed. She introduces herself as Charlotte and tells them that the nearby town of Meeker Springs has a mechanic. When Clark tries to protect Lois again, she tells him to go into town to get the tire replaced, and assures him that nothing can possibly happen to her in the middle of nowhere.

Several hours later, Clark superspeeds back and discovers that Lois is gone, and Charlotte and her stand have disappeared. A patrolman, Ellis, pulls up and asks Clark what happened, as Clark discovers that he's cut himself. Clark then explains what happened, and shows him a board with nails that they passed over. He also finds some horse and buggy tracks, and Ellis agrees to help search for Lois.

Charlotte has taken Charlotte back to her town and explains that she's not allowed to go into town to take Lois to the train. They arrive at an old-fashioned village and Charlotte explains that their whole congregation of believers live there. The girl explains that they're preparing to celebrate the harvest festival. Charlotte's mother Ruth comes out and greets them, and tells Lois that her husband will take her to the train after supper. Lois wants to get going, but reluctantly gives in after figuring she has a few hours until the rally. As Lois goes inside, Charlotte goes to get her father, who tells her that she's saved them all....

Later, Tess considers a vial of fluid that Dr. Lamell has synthesized. Lamell says that it's all they can produce for now, but it's a start, and they used Peter Dinsmore's cloning research to create the serum to cure Alexander. Tess considers, and then breaks into tears and throws the vial into the fire. She then tells Lamell to destroy all of the research and lock up Alexander for everyone's safety. When Lamell objects, saying he'll die in six weeks, Tess says that's the point because Alexander is Lex Luthor.

At the barn, Lois comes to see Clark and shows him a headline on the cultists, which bumped the antihero rally off the front page. Clark wonders how they could have come to such a dark path, and Lois suggests that some day, Clark will have to step into the light and become a symbol to inspire everyone. Clark isn't convinced, but Lois is sure that if they knew him like she does, they'd accept him. He apologizes for being overprotective, and notes that she saved his life. Clark then gives her Swann's journal and says that he doesn't want any secrets between them, because she'll always be the one for him. They kiss and then end up in bed.
