Damon and Stefan devise a new plan to deal with Katherine at the Lockwood's masquerade ball. Katherine asks her friend, Lucy, to join her at the ball. Bonnie, Alaric, and Jeremy do their best to help Stefan and Damon with their plan, but Katherine has a surprise that none of them expected. The evening takes a bad turn when Tyler and Matt start doing shots with their friends.

Katherine and Lucy arrive at the Masquerade ball together. Katherine immediately goes to find Matt, who thinks it's Elena, and reminds him to get Tyler drunk and to get into a fight with him until he is dead. Matt goes off to get drinks with Tyler who was with Amy and Sarah from Mr. Lockwood's study. Meanwhile, Jeremy and Bonnie go upstairs to prepare her spell. Bonnie tells Jeremy that she does not like the responsibilities that come with being a witch. Once everything is ready, they join the party. Bonnie is oddly drawn to Lucy.
At Elena's house, she is surprised when she finds out from Alaric that Stefan and Jeremy are both at the Masquerade. She sneaks out of the house to attend the ball. Katherine asks Stefan to get the moonstone for her, but she does not trust him. Amy complements Elena (Katherine) on her dress, and then Katherine kills her. Stefan freaks out and asks Damon to call off their plan. Damon calms Stefan down and they proceed....

Bonnie asks Lucy what is their connection. Lucy tells her that they are distant cousins, and advises her to stay connected to her inner witch and to user her power for good. Stefan tells Elena that Katherine is gone forever. Elena tells Stefan he cannot be with him at this moment. She needs to make sure all her loved ones are safe. Katherine wakes up and cannot leave because of the spell Bonnie put on her room. Katherine says that Elena is in danger. At the end of the episode, a masked stranger kidnaps Elena.
