Late during the night, a person in what appears to be a black jumpsuit uses a glass cutter to break into a woman's house. After taking out a straight razor and observing a few family photos and a key to the city display, the person proceeds to enter the room of the sleeping owner, a woman, and, at the moment that she awakens, start slashing her with the straight razor.

The next day, the CSIs arrive at the house and deliver the still-conscious woman (whose name is Margaret Wilton) to an ambulance for care, remarking that she was one of the premier philanthropists in Las Vegas and had several buildings named after her. They also exchange short dialogue with Ryan Finke, a paramedic that had saved several children from a burning building the previous week and was honored on television for having done so. Ray and Catherine go inside the house for evidence while Nick looks for a point of entry used by the killer. Ray and Catherine notice several pictures on the wall in which a boy's face is slashed to shreds as well as the key to the city, which the attacker turned upside down. They also notice that the killer was in no hurry, as they would have had to take the pictures out of the frames, slash them, and then put them back in the frames.
